The Icelandic horse originates from the horses brought to Iceland by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th centuries. Through more than 1,000 years of pure breeding and adaptation to a harsh climate, the breed has become known as a compact, strong and extremely hardy horse. At the same time, it differs from many other breeds with its extra gaits, including tölt and pasgang, which place special demands on both horse and equipment.

Icelandic horses are more common today, which is why it's important to choose Icelandic equipment designed specifically for the breed's build, movement and use. Ordinary riding gear doesn't always fit Icelandic horses optimally, neither in fit nor function.

At Unamari, you'll find a complete range of Icelandic horse equipment designed with comfort, durability and correct fit in mind. We design and manufacture our own products under the brands Catago and Horse Guard, so we can be sure to always offer the best Icelandic equipment in the industry.

Why do Icelandic horses require specialized riding gear?

Icelandics are often ridden with equipment that differs from that used for other horse breeds. This is partly due to the horse's compact build, short back and characteristic movement pattern.

Specialized Icelandic equipment:

  • is adapted to the horse's anatomy and reduces the risk of pressure
  • supports free movement in gaits like tölt
  • provides better comfort for longer rides and frequent use
  • is designed to withstand all kinds of weather

Icelandic horses are durable and robust, and so should the equipment they ride with. That's why you'll only find quality equipment designed by Riders for your Icelandic horse right here on this site.

Popular products for your Icelandic horse

Our range covers all the riding equipment typically used for Icelandic horses - from daily training to pleasure riding. The products are selected and developed with a focus on functionality, durability and comfort for the horse.

Here you will find saddle pads, bridles, reins, girths, grooms, rugs, bits and other equipment that are tailored to your Icelandic horse and its specific needs.

Icelandic saddle pads

Icelandic saddle pads are shorter than traditional pads and designed to fit Icelandic saddles, which lie differently on the horse's back. A correct fit is essential to avoid pressure and give the horse optimal conditions for movement.

Our Icelandic saddle pads from Catago have an ergonomic design and are developed with a focus on both comfort and function. They are perfect for your Icelandic horse. You get both great quality and great design.

Bridles for Icelandic horses

Bridles for Icelandic horses are often anatomically shaped to reduce pressure on sensitive areas around the neck, cheekbones and nerves. This can improve the horse's comfort and provide a more stable and relaxed contact point.

Catago Raja and Catago Runa are developed in soft Italian leather and designed to follow the horse's head shape. The neckpiece is shaped to fit softly around the base of the ears, while the Noseband is designed so that it does not inhibit the movement of the jaw or affect the function of the Bit. Light padding further helps to reduce pressure and increase comfort during Riding.

Reins for Icelandic horses

Reins with carabiners or pistol hooks are standard equipment for many Icelandic riders. They make it easy to snap reins on and off the Bit and are particularly practical in everyday life where equipment is often changed.

The range includes both classic leather reins and anti-slip reins that provide a stable grip - even in damp weather.

Icelandic Girth

A properly fitted Girth is important for both horse comfort and saddle stability. Our Catago Girth is made of high-quality leather and has elastic in the middle to avoid uneven draft.

The girth is equipped with stainless steel roller buckles for easier and gentler tightening and is available in several lengths to fit Icelandic saddles.

Girths for Icelandic horses

Many Icelandic horses are free-roaming and grow a thick coat with dense undercoat. This requires groomers that can work effectively in depth - especially during moulting periods.

That's why we offer heavy-duty groomers and rubber groomers that are suitable for long and dense coats. They are designed to make grooming more efficient without compromising the horse's comfort.

Rugs for Icelandic horses

Although many Icelandic horses thrive with their natural coat, rugs can be relevant in certain situations. These include summer eczema, heavy rainfall or during periods of transition.

The range includes exema rugs, rain rugs and functional FIR-Tech Rugs, developed to suit Icelandic horses and their use in the Nordic climate.

FAQ about Icelandic equipment

Can I use regular riding gear for an Icelandic?

Regular riding gear can be used in some cases, but it is often not optimal. Icelandics have a different build and shorter backs, which means specialized Icelandic saddle pads offer better fit, comfort and freedom of movement.

What is the difference between Icelandic saddle pads and regular pads?

Icelandic saddle pads are shorter and shaped for Icelandic saddles so they don't strain the horse's lower back. Regular pads are often too long and can create pressure or restrict the horse's movement.

Why do Icelandic riders use reins with carabiners?

Reins with carabiners make it easy to snap the reins on and off the Bit. It's practical for everyday use and especially common among Icelanders, who prioritize functional and flexible equipment.
