Riding whips come in many different lengths, colors and styles, from the short jumping whip to the all-round riding whip to the long, thin dressage whip and the very long lunge whip with a long string. A riding whip should only ever be used as an assistant in addition to the rider's other helpers.

See our large repertoire of riding whips below. If you're not sure which riding crop you need, you can read more about it right here!

Which riding crop should you use?

Which riding crop you choose depends on the type of riding you need it for. It also matters what the rider can handle. For example, a dressage whip can be harder to control for a less experienced rider due to its length. A regular riding whip or a balance whip can often work better.

A riding whip is far from always necessary, but when it is deemed necessary, find the right one for the riding discipline and rider.

The shortest type of riding whip is a lunge whip. It doesn't reach much further than from the rider's hand to the horse's shoulder and the rider's own thigh. What we typically understand by a riding crop is a slightly longer and slightly more flexible whip than the lunge whip. The longest riding whip is a dressage whip, which extends all the way to the horse's hindquarters. It is thin and even more flexible. In addition, there are also lunge whips and driving whips, which can help guide the horse when working with it from the ground.

What is a jumping whip?

A jumping whip, as the name indicates, is used when there is a need to carry a whip when jumping. It can be a maximum of 75 cm long, but can also be as short as 40 cm. It is short and compact and is often equipped with a larger leather or PU flap at the end.

A jumping whip usually does not have a hand strap for the rider to wear around the wrist.

Unamari carries jumping whips from 50-75 cm. See everything in jumping whip.

Ride whip - what is it?

Ride whip is actually a generic term used for horse whips. Typically what is meant by a riding crop is an all-round, shorter whip for riding, which often has a strap on the handle to reduce the risk of dropping it - even for children. A riding crop is usually over 65 cm and under 100 cm.

Dressage whip: What defines a dressage whip?

A dressage whip is long - for pony riders 100 cm and for horse riders up to 120 cm. As well as being a long whip, it is also a slender, elegant and flexible whip, often with just a piece of string at the end. The dressage whip reaches the horse's hindquarters.

TIP: If you are unsure about the length of whip you are allowed to ride with at competitions, check the Danish Equestrian Federation's website, where the rules for riding whips are specified under each discipline. You can also click here.

Longepisk - a lunge whip

A longe whip is a long whip with a long handle that is also equipped with a long whiplash in extension of the whip itself. A lunge whip is used together with your voice to guide the horse when lunging. A lunge whip is usually between 160 cm and 200 cm long.

Riding whips for children

If junior needs a riding whip, maybe the child dreams of a nice and colorful one. Perhaps a pink riding crop, rainbow-colored riding crop or a riding crop with glitter. Check out Unamari's selection of riding whips in many different colors and models right here.

Why use a riding whip?

The different types of horse whips can be a great assistant for the rider to use. The whip should never be used to hit or whip horses, but can be used as an assistant to signal what we want the horse to do. For example, by touching or tapping with the whip.

A riding whip, regardless of the type, should never be in front of the other assistants the rider has to work with, nor to frighten or threaten the horse.

In 2022, the Danish Equestrian Federation introduced stricter rules for the use of whips to ensure that whips are not used excessively and for punishment. And what exactly does excessive use of the whip mean? The jumping regulations for 2025 specifically state that "... whipping more than twice in a row will always be considered excessive use" and will result in disqualification at jumping competitions, according to the Danish Equestrian Federation.

Whip holder - organize the stable's riding whips

A whip holder organizes the riding whips, which otherwise - let's be honest - can easily be lying here, there and everywhere, and therefore not always easy to find when you need them. The wall-mounted whip holder from Equipage can hold up to 11 riding whips that can be conveniently hung side by side.

Select variant with good grip

A riding whip should not only be functional, but also comfortable to hold while riding. That's why it's important to choose a model with a good grip that fits securely in your hand and gives you full control. Riding whips are available with different types of handles, such as rubberized, leather-wrapped or ergonomically shaped grips that ensure comfort and stability. Whether you need a dressage whip, jumping whip or a short whip for lunging, the right grip can make a big difference to your riding.
