A riding helmet is the absolutely most important piece of riding equipment in equestrian sports - whatever your level. The riding helmet is what protects your head when you fall off, crash or have bad luck when handling horses and ponies. At the same time, we at Unamari know that a riding helmet is not just a piece of safety equipment. It's also a faithful companion on ride after ride, experience after experience. And finally, a practical and functional riding helmet is also part of your personal style as a rider and as a team.

At Unamari, we believe in safety first, and all the helmets you find on this site meet the current safety certifications for riding helmets on the Danish and European market. This means that all our riding helmets are safety approved with EN 1384 (2023) or VG01, and they are CE marked.

But we also have other requirements for our riding helmets. As both riding gear designers, retailers and riders ourselves, we care a lot about:

Helmet comfort

It is a must that the riding helmet is comfortable to wear on the head and that the helmet has very good ventilation via ventilation shafts and inlets that make the helmet breathable.

Helmet design and price

At Unamari, we design riding helmets that have modern, elegant and exciting designs. The look and feel of the helmet is important to us, but it's also a core principle that price and design go hand in hand. We never compromise on quality, but our riding helmets must be affordable - also for the average rider.

At Unamari, you'll find premium riding helmets with great comfort for everything from casual to elite riders. Unamari is the official European website for Equipage and One K, and we carry all One K models available on the European market. We also have a handpicked and excellent selection from Casco.

7 checkpoints when choosing a riding helmet

Set requirements for your helmet - we do

  1. Riding helmet safety & certification
  2. What are your needs?
  3. Helmet price: What is your budget?
  4. Helmet style & design
  5. Helmet comfort
  6. What size helmet do you need?
  7. Maintenance and replacement of riding helmets

1: Safety approved riding helmet: What to look for

Of course you should choose an approved riding helmet according to current safety standards. The most recent safety certification is EN 1384:2023 and the others that still apply are the slightly older VG01 and EN 1384:2017. Sound like gibberish? Don't worry, don't worry. Just look for the marking EN 1384:2023/2017 or VG01 and the CE mark inside the helmet.

The CE mark shows that the riding helmet meets the European requirements for the safety of a riding helmet, and the exact safety certification indicates which tests the helmet has undergone and thus which safety requirements it meets. The field is constantly evolving and new knowledge and test elements are being added. Therefore, only the latest certifications show that your riding helmet is safety approved.

If you shop online, the safety certification of the helmet is typically stated under the product description. Here at Unamari, you can be sure to only find riding helmets with the applicable safety approvals, and you can easily spot which certification it has under the individual helmet.

The safety certification is crucial for whether you can use the helmet at events and competitions under the Danish Equestrian Federation and FEI. However, there may be special guidelines for some international competitions. There are other safety approvals that apply outside Europe.

Most important, however, is the label showing that the helmet has the applicable safety certifications, which means that your riding helmet has been tested according to the most up-to-date and stringent testing requirements to ensure that the riding helmet provides the best safety for the rider.

Riding helmet with MIPS: Take extra care of your head

MIPS is a well-documented, patented technology that consists of a low-friction layer embedded inside some riding helmets. The system provides extra protection by specifically absorbing and reducing the rotational force that happens when you fall off. This reduces the risk of concussion and brain injuries.

MIPS stands for "Multi-Directional Impact System" and it's designed to protect the brain from the rotational shaking that happens when we experience falls from horseback. Traditionally, riding helmets are designed to protect in a fall that only causes the head to shake in a straight line. In practice, however, we often get shocks and shaking in rotation when we fall off. Simply put, MIPS works by the low-friction layer simply absorbing part of the impact that would otherwise cause your brain to shake inside the skull.

Please note that MIPS goes beyond the requirements for the standard safety certification of riding helmets. However, here at Unamari we have several helmets with this feature.

You can find all MIPS in OneK models right here.

2: Find a riding helmet for your needs

When choosing a riding helmet, it's a good idea to think about the rider's needs so that the helmet matches what it will be used for. Does the rider practice disciplines that place special demands on the helmet? Or is the helmet for a beginner? And is it a riding helmet for women, men or children?

Most riding helmets can be used across disciplines in equestrian sports and are also unisex in fit and structure. Therefore, it's often your personal taste and trends in equestrian sports that influence what goes with what. However, there are exceptions.

Military riding helmet

Xtreme from One K is a good riding helmet for military because the shade can be removed. In addition, the One K Xtreme also appeals to many male riders because of its solid and unadorned appearance. It is not a riding helmet designed for men, but it is loved by many male riders.

In military, there is typically no shade on the helmet, but often riders ride with a helmet cover that can have a smaller shade. This makes the One K Xtreme ideal.

Which helmet for jumping?

There are no special requirements for a jumper's helmet beyond those that generally apply to safety and fit. In recent years, the design has moved towards wider and larger shadows. However, there is perhaps a preference for the glossy and shiny helmets in the discipline. This applies to both glossy riding helmets and riding helmets with glitter.

The right riding helmet for dressage

A riding helmet for competitive dressage must be safety approved and dark, and of course it should have the right size and fit. Otherwise, there are no requirements for what a dressage helmet should look like. However, many dressage riders go for a matte riding helmet. On the other hand, many dressage riders appreciate that there is room to wear their hair up in a bun. The riding helmets from OneK have plenty of room for a hair updo or bun, with the option to change the liner so you can fit your hair in the helmet without compromising on fit or safety.

The right riding helmet for the leisure rider

If you see yourself more as a quiet and calm all-round rider who is neither a beginner nor aiming for competitions and high levels, you may be looking for a good quality all-round riding helmet that is neither too flashy nor too basic and boring.

A riding helmet many leisure riders are happy with is Mistrall and Mistrall 2 from Casco. Both approved riding helmets have beautiful and functional designs and offer great fit and ventilation. Mistrall also allows you to change the color of the band that runs across the helmet with Casco's MyStyle system.

New riding helmet for the beginner?

A good beginner riding helmet is typically one that costs nothing like the tip of an elite horse. It's a riding helmet that's easy to use, simple to get on and off, and comfortable to wear. It's often - but not always - relatively neutral in its look and features. But essentially, all riding helmets can be used for the beginner.

Approved riding helmets for kids

A riding helmet for kids must be safety approved for riding. It should also fit the child's head size and shape, and preferably be adjustable in size to allow room for growth. It's also a good idea to choose a lightweight helmet and one that has an easy closure system for the child.

Some children also enjoy special colors, glitter or visual expressions on their riding helmet. At Unamari, we have the right riding helmet for your child and we have plenty to choose from. This entire page shows a large selection of different riding helmets in stylish and durable materials.

Because children grow fast, it's also a good idea to make sure your riding helmet is adjustable. Our children's riding helmets from Casco and Equipage can all be adjusted in size at the back, just like you might know from bicycle helmets, while One K is adjustable with a liner.

The most important thing for a riding helmet to be good for children is that it is an approved riding helmet that fits well and firmly around the head and does not slide down the forehead or upwards. It should also be lightweight and comfortable for the child to wear.

3: New riding helmets in all price ranges - Find one for your budget

The price of riding helmets generally ranges from a few hundred dollars to well over 10,000 dollars. At Unamari, we don't have the cheapest and cheapest riding helmets or those that cost around half a month's salary. We have actively taken the position that price and quality must harmonize throughout our range of riding helmets.

This means that we carry quality helmets, but also that at Unamari you can find quality helmets for every budget. As a guideline, a rough breakdown of the prices of our riding helmet brands looks like this:

Price categories of Unamari riding helmets:

  • Equipage: 500 - 1000 DKK
  • Casco: 1000 - 4000 DKK
  • One K: 2000 - 4000 DKK

4: Design & Style: What should your riding helmet look like?

A riding helmet today can look in many ways and is also an expression of your style as a rider. Should your riding helmet have a wide brim or a regular one? Should your riding helmet have a color, glossy or matte surface, glitter, or whether it should be more classic in chamude?

Or maybe you like a combination of several elements? Long gone are the days when a riding helmet was an all-black faux suede affair. Today, the options are endless.

Women's riding helmets

All adult riding helmets on the Unamaris webshop can be used as women's riding helmets. However, many female riders across disciplines are particularly fond of the Avance from OneK, which is often perceived as a more feminine helmet. There are also helmets with more ornate details, such as swarovski stones or glitter.

Wide brim riding helmet

If you're a competitive rider or just in the know, you may have spotted the wide brim riding helmet trend. But it's not just a fad. If you ride outdoors, it can be incredibly nice because it provides more shade and therefore makes your view easier and more comfortable.

Less sun in your eyes can be nice when you have to orientate yourself far ahead as a jumper or hunter rider, but it can be just as nice with good visibility for the dressage rider or those who just ride a lot or on the outdoor course.

OneK has the Avancé model with a wide brim, while an offering from Equipage is Kaia and Casco has the Duell model with a slightly wider brim.

5: Riding helmet comfort

Your riding helmet should be comfortable to wear. Underneath the comfort of the helmet are aspects like the weight and feel of it on your head. There's also the helmet's ventilation and materials so you don't get too hot or sweaty while riding, and not least your personal experience of the helmet materials.

Ventilation in your riding helmet

When it comes to ventilation, all our riding helmets are excellent and well-ventilated with several good and well-placed ventilation shafts that ensure good breathability and the ability to get rid of heat. But there are differences in how each brand approaches this.

OneK operates with 4 vents on all their helmets: two on the top of the helmet and two on the sides, giving you great ventilation. In addition, all OneK liners, which is the layer between the helmet and your head, are made of washable, breathable, quick-drying and antibacterial material.

Equipage has different ventilation systems on the riding helmets. For example, Kaia has 7 ventilation shafts and a removable liner so it can be washed, while the Kizzy children's riding helmet has 9 ventilation inlets.

Casco has several different ventilation systems on their helmets, and generally makes riding helmets with really good ventilation and air intakes. Casco prides itself on helmets with superior airflow and comfort.

After all that is said about comfort, the riding helmet must of course first and foremost fit well in both size and fit, otherwise it is neither as safe nor as comfortable as it can be.

6: How to find riding helmet size and fit?

To find your riding helmet size, you need a tape measure. This is because the size of a riding helmet is based on the centimeter measurement around the user's head. The tape measure should be 1-1.5 finger widths above the eyebrow and around the head along the broad point at the back of the head. The measurement you get is the helmet size.

If you get a measurement of 56 cm, your helmet size is 56. Today, however, there are several brands that use different sizes. For example, OneK's sizes are 0, 1 and 2, while Casco and Equipage's sizes are XS, S, M and L. However, they are all based on centimetre measurements and there is a size guide to help you translate the head measurement to each brand's sizes.

The right size is crucial to ensure that the riding helmet protects you optimally and cannot slip up or down. The same goes for the fit. Of course, both also have a big impact on comfort. On most riding helmets today, you can adjust the fit if you have the right size to start with.

On helmets from Equipage, you can adjust the size at the back. You can also do this on most Casco helmets, while some models, like Apart, have an inner material that adapts to your head shape and doesn't need further adjustment. Riding helmets from OneK need to be fitted with a liner so that the size fits you and your head shape exactly. There are many different ones, such as for example, a liner to fit oval and round head shapes.

7. Helmet maintenance, storage and replacement

Many people want to know how long a riding helmet will last. The exact answer is that it depends on several factors. For example, how you store your helmet, how often you use it, how dirty it gets and whether you smoke off. However, our manufacturers say a riding helmet should be replaced at least every 3-5 years.

This is of course assuming the helmet is otherwise in good condition and has no visible damage or has been on board during a fall or crash. One of the reasons why you should change your helmet every 3-5 years is that after that you can no longer be sure that the inside of the helmet is intact and functioning optimally.

You should always change your helmet if there is visible damage to it, no matter how old it is. In fact, at Unamari, we recommend replacing it if you have the slightest suspicion that it might be damaged, even if you can't see or feel any damage. The main job of a riding helmet is to keep your head safe. Of course, the safety it provides on paper won't be there if it's broken or has cracks you can't see. You only have one head - let's not be headless about safety.

Therefore: make sure to replace your riding helmet regularly, but also to look after and store it optimally until it's time for a new one.

How to make sure your riding helmet is in the best possible condition:

  • Make sure it dries after use - but not in direct sun. The sun will soften the helmet materials.
  • Store your riding helmet dry and out of direct sunlight. No warmer than room temperature, and preferably in a place where it is not enclosed airtight so it can ventilate.
  • If the liner is washable, wash it regularly according to the washing instructions.
  • Wipe your helmet regularly with a damp cloth inside and out. And remember the straps. Use mild soap if necessary, but no detergents. Use a lint-free cloth.
  • If you use a helmet bag for riding helmets, make sure your riding helmet is clean and dry before putting it in the bag.
