Riding helmets with MIPS are for riders who want a modern riding helmet with a focus on extra protection for falls and angled impacts. Here you'll find carefully selected MIPS riding helmets from brands such as One K and Equipage, where advanced safety technology is combined with super comfort, perfect fit and a stylish design for both training and competition.

What is MIPS?

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System and is a technology developed to reduce rotational forces on the brain during falls and angled impacts. The technology is used in modern riding helmets as an additional safety layer that helps reduce the movement that can occur between the head and helmet in a crash.

A MIPS riding helmet is equipped with a special low-friction layer inside the helmet - also called a MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS). The system allows the helmet to move 10-15 mm independently of the head in an angled impact. This helps redirect the energy of the impact and reduce rotational movement, which can otherwise affect the brain and, in the worst case, lead to concussions or serious brain injuries.

The technology was developed in collaboration between experts in brain injury, biomechanics and safety equipment and is particularly relevant in equestrian sports, where falls rarely occur in a perfectly straight line.

MIPS vs. traditional riding helmets

Traditional riding helmets are primarily designed to withstand linear impacts where the impact is directly against the helmet. However, in many riding accidents, the impact occurs at an angle, creating rotational movement and rotational forces that both affect the brain and can cause serious injuries.

This is where MIPS riding helmets differentiate themselves by providing extra protection against these rotational impacts. The MIPS BPS system works independently of impact direction and helps reduce the risk of angled impacts from all directions.

The system also adds only minimal volume and around 30 grams of extra weight, so comfort and fit still feel natural while Riding. You can typically recognize the technology by the yellow MIPS logo inside the riding helmet

How does MIPS work?

The MIPS Brain Protection System was developed based on research into how the brain is affected in falls. In many riding accidents, the impact is not straight on, but at an oblique angle. This angled impact can create rotational forces that affect the brain inside the skull.

This is precisely where MIPS BPS works independently of the direction of impact. The technology is designed to reduce the rotational forces that can otherwise lead to concussions or serious injuries.

Several studies indicate that MIPS technology can reduce the risk of concussion by up to 40% compared to regular helmets without rotational protection. That's why many riders today choose riding helmets with MIPS as an extra safety measure - both for daily training, picnics and competition.

However, it's important to emphasize that no riding helmet can completely eliminate the risk of falls. A riding helmet should always be replaced after a hard impact, even if the helmet appears undamaged.

Does MIPS affect BPS fit?

One question many riders ask is whether MIPS affects the fit of the riding helmet. In practice, the difference is minimal.

The MIPS system is designed to integrate discreetly into the inside of the helmet without changing the basic comfort. As the technology only adds minimal volume, most riders will experience the same stable fit as a traditional riding helmet.

However, the fit still determines how well the riding helmet protects. A riding helmet must fit snugly and stably without pressure points, while at the same time not being able to move during riding. For our One K helmets with MIPS, you should always buy a line to make the fit match you perfectly.

When choosing a riding helmet with MIPS, it is therefore important to:

  • choose the correct size
  • adjust the chin strap correctly
  • make sure the helmet fits evenly around your head
  • try different models, as the fit varies between brands
