What is lunging?

Lunging is the training of horses and ponies from the ground, usually using a long line called a lunge line or long rope. However, lunging can also be done without a lunge line or in double lines, also known as driving lines.

The lunge line is the connection between the horse and the lunge handler. When lunging, the horse moves around the handler in a large circle. The lunging handler directs the horse with his voice, body position and, for example, a lunge whip.

What is lunging good for?

Lunging is a form of training that can be refined endlessly, just like the art of riding itself. Lunging can be beneficial at several different stages of horse education and training. For example

  • in the training of young horses before the rider is introduced
  • as part of the training program for the individual horse
  • when the horse is at the vet, for example in connection with a trade examination or lameness

The horse being led in a longline can also be used in a training context where the rider is the focus. This can be to give an inexperienced rider confidence, for example when trying to canter for the first time, or if the rider has lost faith in the interaction with the horse. Lunging can also be used to develop the rider's balance etc. as full focus can be kept on this, as the lunge guide indicates direction, pace etc. for the horse.

Everything for lunging the horse

At Unamari you will find a large selection of lungeing for controlling the horse. We have a wealth of different products that can be a great help for you and your horse. From whips to lining, Unamari has everything you need to ride your horse with confidence.

Longline

Our range includes longlines in durable and hard-wearing materials in different colors according to taste. For example, our Horse Guard soft lunge line and Horse Guard lunge line, which is a strong and extra soft polyester lunge line with a gun hook that comes in a smart little bag for easy packing, storage and transportation.

Driving line

We also offer a driving line - Horse Guard Cheval driving line in 16 and 18 meters.

Why use a cape?

A cape is placed on the horse's head like a bridle or halter. If you want to lunge your horse without a bit, a cape is a great solution.

Our Horse Guard neoprene cape is ideal for lunging, but also for other types of ground training. It has a range of adjustment options so you can ensure a good and comfortable fit. It has flexible adjustment options, including brackets on the noseband that allow you to attach lunging ropes or reins here.

Can you lunge in a halter?

Horses can be lunged in bridle, grime or kapsun. The choice will be individual from horse to horse, taking into account each horse's needs. If you prefer to lunge in a halter, we recommend you choose a halter with a soft lining, possibly one of our Catago halters with imitation lamb.

Lunging accessories

Some horse people prefer to use a Nylon delta - attaches to either side of the bit and has a ring in the middle under the horse's jaw. This is where the lunge line snaps in and allows the handler to avoid changing sides of the lunge line every time the horse changes tack. We also have a lot of other longing accessories that can help you teach your horse exactly what it needs.

Lunging girth

A lunging girth is an important piece of riding equipment that many prefer to use when lunging. Over the back, the girth is designed to fit snugly and attaches on both sides at the girth bed, just like a traditional girth used with a saddle. The lunge strap serves as a support and to attach and guide reins and auxiliary reins as needed. Our Horse Guard lunge girth therefore has many different rings, which makes it possible to adapt the setup to the individual horse. It also has a neoprene lining for padding. Neoprene is soft and easy to clean

Horse Guard teddy pad for Longegjord

In our range you will also find a teddy pad for the longegjord. It attaches easily with Velcro and is especially good for clipped horses, or horses with fine fur or delicate skin, as extra protection against friction.

Horse Guard Kali lunging pad

As needed, it may be appropriate to use a pad under the lunging girth. For example, we can recommend our Horse Guard Kali lunging pad, which is a pad for the lunge strap with a thin foam filling. This pad has a mesh lining that ensures good breathability so that the horse's coat is not irritated by sweat accumulation. The pad has an air mesh insert along the spine to prevent pressure during use.

Catago FIR-Tech memory foam lunge pad

Another option is our Catago FIR-Tech memory foam lunge pad, which is made of premium memory foam with Catago FIR-Tech technology. The favorable anti-inflammatory and warming properties of the woven ceramic particles also come into their own in this training situation. At the same time, the memory foam acts as a soft and comfortable layer between the horse's back and the lunge line. The top is made of breathable mesh, which keeps the horse cool during training. The pad has a thick foam edge at the front that prevents it and the lunge line from sliding forward when the horse moves.

Lunge whip

In our range you will find a selection of Equipage lunge whips and an Equipage driving whip. The driving whip has a length of 140 cm. and the lunge whips are available in lengths of 120 cm, 140 cm, 160 cm, 180 cm. and 200 cm. depending on type. The driving whip has a short lash while the lunge whips have long lashes that can make a loud sound.

It is important to point out that the whips are intended to be indicative in lungeing. The driving whip was/is used for driving a horse, but also for training from the ground such as hand training or loose jumping. The same goes for the lungeing whip.

Being a good lunge driver is an art, just like lunging itself, as we have already mentioned. We therefore always recommend thorough training, both in the technique of lunging, how to use a lunge whip and generally how to interact with the horse from the ground in the lunge.

How long should a lunge whip be?

You should consider your own height when choosing a lunge whip. If the whip is too long for your height, it can be harder to control. It can also be heavy to handle. You also need to consider the size of the horse(s) you are lunging.

Lunging reins

It is not uncommon for different types of reins to be used for lunging. The intention is to direct the horse to work in a way that uses its body appropriately. It is also of the utmost importance that you either have the knowledge and experience or ally yourself with an experienced horse person who can help you set up and use reins in a way that avoids all kinds of inappropriate pressure, stress and strain on the horse. This also applies to our Horse Guard soft lunging aid and Horse Guard lunging system.
