What is a halter?

A halter is an essential piece of equipment that is used to handle and lead the horse safely in everything from longer transportation trips to short trips to the raddock. Halter and lead rope - the perfect pair

A lead rope, also known as a halter shank in an older term, is used with the halter when we pull the horse. It is a rope with a carabiner at the end that attaches to the halter. The halter and lead rope are for many inseparable as a pair. Often, it makes the most sense to lead your horse or pony in the halter with the help of a lead rope.

What should a halter do?

The basic thing when choosing a halter for your horse is to decode what needs it should cover. Is it for paddock, transportation, training or is it to cover a safety need?

Maybe you have a completely different requirement for the new halter. Perhaps you've been around the paddock a little too often looking for a lost halter, in which case it might be smart to choose a brightly colored halter so you can spot it more easily on the paddock.

How should a halter fit?

A halter should fit so firmly that it doesn't fall off the horse's head, but loose enough that the horse still has good freedom of movement to chew, yawn etc.

It is important that the Halter has good adjustability so it can be customized to the individual horse. Most halters can be adjusted over the neck, on one or both sides, and under the nose with buckles. In addition, halters have a carabiner under the jaw, which can be easily unbuckled when putting the halter on and off.

Lined halters and plush halters

If you choose a lined halter, you're going up a notch in comfort for your horse. Holders with a neoprene lining or similar are great for use on the paddock because it's made of durable material. A halter with plush, on the other hand, would not be preferable for paddock as it absorbs water, which becomes uncomfortable for the horse. Halter with plush, on the other hand, can work well as a transport halter as they relieve pressure.

Transport halters

As for transport halters, you may want to choose a halter with more lining, such as a halter with plush or faux lambskin. It has a pressure-relieving effect and is especially good for horses that tend to get chafing and pressure from the halter.
