What is a halter?

A halter is put on the horse's head when we handle it. Halters are often used in our dealings with horses. When we tie them up, when we pull them, when we transport them. A halter can also be used for lunging or training from the ground. Some riders also choose to ride with a halter instead of a bridle. Most horses spend time in the paddock every day, and the vast majority of horses also wear a halter.

What is a pulling rope?

A pulling rope, also known as a halter shank, is used together with the halter when we pull with the horse. It is a rope with a carabiner at the end that is attached to the halter. Halter and pulling rope are often mentioned in the same sentence. They kind of belong together as a pair. This is not without reason. There aren't many cases where it makes sense to lead your horse or pony in the halter without a pulling rope.

What should a halter do?

The basic question when choosing a halter is what needs it should cover. Is it for folding, transportation, training, competition, or does it need to cover a safety need, for example?

How should a halter fit?

A halter should fit so firmly that it does not fall off the horse's head, but so loosely that the horse still has good freedom of movement to chew, yawn etc. It's important that the halter has good adjustability so that it can be adapted to the individual horse. Most halters can be adjusted over the neck, on one or both sides, and under the nose with buckles. They also have a carabiner under the jaw, which can be easily tightened when putting on and taking off the halter.

Pony and foal halters

Under our Horse Guard brand, we also produce folding halters for both pony and foals. The halters are padded for comfort and protection. They have an adjustable noseband and neckpiece to fit different head sizes as the foal grows. They also have a removable grip strap under the jaw, which can make it easier to handle the foal in the beginning and can be removed later. These are produced in pony, foal and yearling sizes

In addition, you will also find show halters for foals in leather and with beautiful headbands.

Horse halters

A halter for horses in the paddock is a basic wardrobe item for most horses. Horse Guard and Catago really give you a lot of choice. There can be different requirements for what qualities a good folding halter should possess. Some choose the simple and budget-friendly nylon halter in a classic and practical color like black or navy. Others opt for a halter with a little more padding over the nose and neck. Still others go for an eye-catching pattern or color so it's easy to recognize.

Lined halters

If you choose a lined halter, you're going up a notch in terms of comfort for your horse. For example, halters with a neoprene lining etc. are good for folding use. A plush lining, on the other hand, is generally not preferable for folding as it absorbs water and becomes heavy with dirt and grime, which becomes uncomfortable for the horse.

Beautiful halters

Catago FIR-Tech halter

CATAGO FIR-Tech halter gives your horse maximum comfort. It has a wide removable headpiece and the halter's wide noseband is lined with FIR-tech material, which has ceramic particles that reflect the horse's own body heat to increase blood circulation.

This helps to reduce tension, especially around the neck, and increase the horse's well-being. The halter is also made of durable nylon with lightweight buckles, making it easy and comfortable for the horse to wear. This halter can be a good choice both in the paddock but also during transportation.

Transport halters

During transportation, we want the horse to be as comfortable as possible. When it comes to transportation halters, you can choose a halter with more lining, such as plush or faux lambskin. It relieves pressure and is especially good for horses that tend to get chafing and pressure from the halter.

Leather halters

Harness covers

If you have a halter that you'd like to give some extra padding, we make it possible with our smart halter covers in faux lambskin. They come in sets for nose and neck pieces or sets where you also get cheek pieces. Both in natural and black

Traction rope

As mentioned earlier, the traction rope is the halter's companion. In addition to its practical function, the pull rope also has a safety aspect, which is why we carry pull ropes with both regular carabiners and panic hooks that can be quickly released in an emergency. The panic hook can be especially preferable for horses and ponies that are either new to being tied up or have lost confidence in it and may throw themselves back if startled.

We stock the classic twisted Horse Guard pulling rope, which is budget-friendly and available in most stables. It is thick yet lightweight. It has a large gun hook for easy attachment and the functional length of 2 meters. They are available in a multitude of colors, so you can always find a pulling rope that matches your other riding gear and equestrian items.

You can also find pulling ropes in the more silky polycord composition. These also have a large gun hook for easy attachment. To prevent the rope from tangling or fraying, a rubber cap is fitted at the end of the rope. This rope is also two meters long.

If you're looking for an elegant pulling rope for competition use, the Catago gripping handle in premium quality round stitched leather might be just what you're looking for. It also has a length of 2 meters and is available in brown and black to match the Catago leather halters.
