A good stable fork should, first and foremost, make daily mucking out easier. At Unamari, you’ll find Horse Guard plastic stable forks for both adults and children, available in a variety of colors. We develop Horse Guard ourselves, and when it comes to a tool that’s often used every single day, our clear assessment is that light weight and ease of handling are more important in many stables than choosing the strongest rake.
Which stable fork should you choose?
The best stable fork depends primarily on the type of bedding you’re mucking out and who will be using it. For a standard horse stall with wood shavings or wood pellets, a lightweight plastic scoop is often the most practical choice. Here, the task typically involves removing manure while leaving as much clean bedding as possible behind.
If you use the fork frequently, you should also consider its weight. The difference may seem small when you lift the fork for the first time, but over the course of a full mucking-out session, it adds up to many repeated lifts. That’s why we generally prefer a lighter fork for daily stall cleaning over extra strength, which you won’t necessarily benefit from.
If you primarily need to move large quantities of hay or heavy material, your needs may be different.
Plastic or metal barn pitchfork?
A metal barn pitchfork might initially sound like the obvious choice, since metal is associated with greater strength. But the strongest option isn’t necessarily the best for mucking out.
Plastic has the clear advantage of keeping the weight down. This makes the rake easier to lift, turn, and work with over longer periods of time. For general mucking out in wood shavings and wood pellets, we will therefore often choose plastic.
Metal, on the other hand, may be appropriate if the rake is subjected to heavier loads or needs to be used with denser material. The downside is typically the extra weight. The choice should therefore not be based on plastic or metal solely based on durability, but rather on the actual work the rake is intended to perform.
Bedding for wood shavings, wood pellets, and straw
The type of bedding plays a major role in determining which fork works best.
With wood shavings and wood pellets, you’ll usually want to be able to separate manure without simultaneously removing large amounts of clean bedding. Here, a stable fork is practical because loose material can fall through the tines, while the larger clumps remain on the rake. This can make daily mucking out more efficient and reduce unnecessary waste of bedding.
With straw, the task changes. The long straw strands can get tangled and be more difficult to separate in the same way. If you have a stall with a lot of straw, you should therefore prioritize a rake suited to that type of work, rather than automatically choosing the same solution as for a stall with fine wood shavings.
For other tasks around the barn, a stable fork can be usefully combined with, for example, a manure collector, while among our other stable equipment you can find tools for other aspects of daily care.
A lightweight stable fork makes a difference in everyday life
Weight is often overlooked when choosing barn tools. In practice, it’s one of the features we’d prioritize highly.
When the tool is used repeatedly to lift manure, shake off shavings, and empty the contents into a wheelbarrow, a lightweight tool means less weight with every movement. This is especially important if you’re cleaning multiple stalls.
The shaft and handle should also be a good fit for the user. A stable fork that’s too short or unwieldy can make a simple task more difficult than necessary.
Stable forks for children
Children don’t necessarily need to use the same stable forks as an adult. A standard rake may have a shaft that’s too long and be unnecessarily heavy and difficult to maneuver.
That’s why Horse Guard stable forks are available in models designed for children. A smaller, lighter fork is better proportioned for a child and makes it easier to help with mucking out and other small tasks in the stable.
For many horse owners, a lightweight plastic rake is the most practical solution for daily mucking out, especially when dealing with wood shavings and wood pellets. Choose first based on the bedding type and the task at hand - and then based on size, weight, and the person who will be using the rake.
