What is a turnout rug?

A turnout rug is an outdoor rug that horses and ponies wear when they go to the paddock. They come in different thicknesses, which are denoted in grams. Our rugs range from 0 grams, which is a light rain rug, to 500 grams, which is a warm winter rug. Blankets weighing 150 and 200 grams are often referred to as transition blankets.

There are also other terms that can be useful to know when choosing an outdoor blanket.

Water column pressure and taped seams

Water column pressure describes how much water the tire can withstand. This is expressed in millimeters. Our turnout coats are between 3,000 - 8,000 in water column pressure. Water column pressure is measured by performing a test on a single square centimeter of the fabric. The test is to measure how high a jet of water the fabric can keep out for 24 hours. We also use taped seams for better water resistance

Ripstop

Ripstop is a very special way of weaving materials. It is woven in a square pattern. This technique reinforces the material and makes it more durable than other materials. It is precisely this strength of the material that makes it so interesting for outdoor rugs for horses that are exposed to a bit of everything when horses play, scratch or roll.

Denier

Denier is a measure of the durability of the rug. The higher the denier, the higher the abrasion resistance. Denier is the thickness or density of the thread from which the outer fabric of the tire is made. A tire for outdoor use should have a higher denier than, for example, a tire for stable or riding use.

Breathability

Breathability describes the fabric's ability to transmit moisture and sweat and describes how much condensation the fabric lets through.

How do I find the right size of a tire?

The tire size is given in length in cm. To find the right size, measure your horse's back from withers to tail root and add 10 cm. Depending on the model, you'll find our rugs in sizes 105 cm, 115 cm, 125 cm, 135 cm, 145 cm, 155 cm and 165 cm.

Our turnout rugs for ponies are even produced down to sizes 75 cm, 85 cm and 95 cm.

Catago Barlow tire

Catago Barlow is a stylish and durable turnout tire, available both as a transition tire in 150 g. and winter tire in 300 g.

Catago Dual Pro tire

Catago Dual Pro tire is a new and innovative 2-layer tire. The outer rug is made of 600D nylon with a breathability of 5000 mvp, which makes the rug very durable and breathable. The pleats at the horse's shoulders ensure maximum comfort and freedom of movement for the horse. Water column pressure: 5000 mm. The rug fits the Catago Endurance neck. The inner rug is made of 420D polyester and has a Velcro front closure and a girth under the belly, which allows the rug to be used separately as a stable rug. The rug comes with an outer rug with 100g filling and an inner rug with 100g filling. Both rugs have a polyester inner lining that keeps the horse's coat shiny. A thicker inner rug can be purchased in the form of the Catago Dual Pro Liner. The 300g inner rug can be fitted in the Catago Dual Pro rug or used as a separate stable rug. The rug has a Velcro front closure and webbing under the belly. The outside of the rug is made of 420D polyester.

Catago Endurance rug

Catago Endurance is a warm, waterproof and breathable turnout rug in heavy 1680D polyester. Super fit, taped seams and heavy polyester lining make it ideal for winter use. The rug has an adjustable double front closure with gun hooks and D-rings, goose slit, cross surcingles, elastic leg straps and an extra large tail flap. The rug also has a reflective edge all around the barrel and a large reflector on the tail flap that makes it easy to find the horse in a dark field. Neck can be purchased separately. Breathability: 5000 mvp. Water column pressure: 5000mm. Available in 0 g, 150 g, 300 g and 500 g.

The Catago Endurance neck is a neck that fits the Catago Endurance tire 0 and 200 g.

Catago Hybrid turnout tire

The Catago Hybrid turnout tire is a turnout tire with Catago Hybrid technology. The graphene print on the inside of the tire has beneficial thermoregulatory, anti-static and wear-resistant properties. Part of the Performance Line, designed to provide maximum comfort and protection from the elements.

Catago Jason 2.0

Catago Jason 2.0 is a waterproof and breathable rain tire in 600D ripstop. Super fit, taped seams and heavy cotton lining. The raincoat has adjustable double front closure with gun hooks and D-rings, goose slit, cross surcingles, elastic leg straps and tail flap. Breathability: 3000 mvp. Water column pressure: 3000 mm. 0, 200, 400 g.

Catago Justin 2.0 is a waterproof and breathable rain jacket in 600D ripstop. Super fit, taped seams and heavy cotton lining. The raincoat has adjustable double front closure with gun hooks and D-rings, goose slit, cross surcingles, elastic leg straps and tail flap. Breathability: 3000 mvp. Water column pressure: 3000 mm. 0-150 and 300 g.
