A weymouth bit creates a unique communication between rider and horse. With the weymouth bit, an experienced rider can refine the signals and create a very precise contact with the horse. The two reins and two bits required to ride with a weymouth bit necessitates a sensitive and balanced rider hand and complete trust from the horse.

What is a weymouth bit?

The weymouth bit is part of riding with a double bridle. The double bridle bit combination is mostly used in dressage and consists of 3 parts:

  1. A weymouth bit (or curb bit) - fitted with bars instead of a ring bit, for example
  2. A chain strap for the curb bar - regulates the rotation of the bar and balances the distribution of pressure
  3. A bradoon bit - a snaffle bit that acts as the primary contact between the rider's hand and the horse's mouth.

Two bits - one language

The two bits together provide a differentiated contact with the horse. The bars increase the pressure in the horse's mouth, but should be used with care. It is the snaffle bit that your horse should use balance, while the weymouth bit is used for fine-tuning.

Precision in your training

The weymouth bit enhances contact and communication between you and your horse. The bit allows you to use precise rein aids, independent of seat and leg aids. This kind of precision is crucial in dressage riding and requires you to ride with a light, steady hand, and full control.

Variations of weymouth bits

Weymouth bits come in many varieties with different materials and lengths - from beginner weymouth bits to longer models for experienced riders and well-trained horses. The thickness of the bar in the bit can also vary - some are thicker, others thinner, depending on your needs.

Advantages of the weymouth bit:

  • Enables precise and refined signals between the rider's hand and the horse's mouth
  • Supports the horse's self-carriage and gait development
  • Suitable for experienced and professional riders
  • The weymouth bit is ideal for dressage.

Respect for your horse's mouth

Horses have many sensitive muscles in their mouth. Respecting your horse's mouth is therefore fundamental to all good riding with weymouth bits. Your horse's basic training must be in place, and it's crucial that the horse trusts the bit - and not least you, the rider.

For experienced riders only

Riding with a double bridle requires riding with two reins. You must therefore have the expertise and overview to be able to, for example, loosen the curb rein and tighten the bradoon rein independently of each other. If you are a beginner, it is recommended that you start working with the weymouth bit gradually and with an experienced trainer.

Quality for your money

At Unamari, we carry weymouth bits from the renowned British brand Neue Schule, who have revolutionized the industry with their specialization in ergonomic bits and focus on equine well-being. Our own brand Horse Guard offers both high functionality and high durability - and incredible value for your money!

Stainless steel and metal alloys

Weymouth bits are made with stainless steel. Some bits are also made with metal alloys, such as copper and aluminum, because it stimulates the horse's mouth and increases saliva production. This makes the bit more comfortable for your horse and promotes a calmer contact when riding.

Complete the set

Because the double bridle system consists of a combination of weymouth bit and under bit, riding with a curb bit requires the right equipment. In addition to the two bits, you also need two reins instead of one. The bit is available in several variations and sizes, depending on what you and your horse need.

What you need to complete the set:

  • A weymouth bit with bars
  • A bradoon bit - can be a snaffle bit that the horse is already comfortable with
  • The double bridle, where the two different bits can be fixed
  • Two reins - one for the weymouth bit and one for the under bit.

For riders with understanding and responsibility

At Unamari we want to support riders who ride with care and respect for the horse's physique and psyche. Curb bits are for those riders who want to refine their aids and ride with minimal impact and maximum understanding. That's why we only carry high-quality curb bits that support that type of riding.
