Horse Guard Jersey cooler rug
Horse Guard Jersey cooler rug

At Unamari, we produce and develop a wide range of cooler rugs and sweat rugs in our own brands Catago and Horse Guard. Our Rugs are designed for the horse's everyday life - after training, washing, in the stable and during transportation - with a focus on correct temperature regulation, comfort and function. On this page you will always find the full and current range.

What is a cooler rug?

A cooler rug - also called a sweat rug - is used when the horse is wet or sweaty. This could be after training, washing or rain. The main function of the rug is to transport water and sweat away from the horse's body, allowing the moisture to escape to the outside of the Rug where it can evaporate.

At the same time, the cooler rug helps keep the horse warm so it doesn't get cold or chilled during drying. This combination of moisture transport and temperature control makes cooler rugs indispensable in many situations - both in the stable and during transportation.

Is there a difference between a cooler rug and a sweat rug?

In practice, the terms cooler rug and sweat rug are often used for the same type of rug. Both aim to wick sweat and moisture away from the horse while retaining body heat so the horse doesn't get cold. The difference is typically in the choice of material and construction - not in function. Therefore, in most cases, a cooler rug can also function as a sweat rug.

Cooler rugs transport water and moisture efficiently

Cooler rugs and sweat rugs are made from materials with good moisture wicking properties. When the horse sweats, moisture is drawn away from the coat, allowing the horse to dry faster and in a more controlled manner. At the same time, body heat is retained, which is important to prevent muscles from becoming cold and stiff after work.

This slow and controlled cooling is especially important for horses that sweat a lot, clipped horses and horses in regular training.

When to use cooler rugs and sweat rugs?

A cooling blanket can be used in several different situations:

  • After training, when the horse is hot and sweaty
  • After washing, when the horse is wet to the skin
  • During transportation, when the rug keeps the horse dry and temperate
  • In the stable, where drafts and cool conditions can put horses at risk of hypothermia

Cooler rugs are suitable for both horse and pony and are used all year round - especially during transition periods and changing temperature conditions.

Materials and properties of cooler rugs

Cooler rugs are made from different materials, each with their own strengths:

  • Fleece has excellent moisture wicking properties and is often used when the horse sweats after exercise.
  • Wool used to be the material of choice as it retains heat even when wet but can be heavy and cumbersome.
  • Modern synthetic materials today have the same properties as wool but are easier to handle.
  • Viscose and microfiber have high absorbency and are often used in rugs that need to dry the horse quickly.

Some cooler rugs can also be activated by being wetted with water, creating a cooling effect via evaporation - ideal on hot days. If you're looking for protection against insects or lightweight rugs, it's a summer rug or a fly rug that you need.

Large selection of cooler rugs

A cooler rug is a staple piece of equipment for many horse owners. With different materials, fits and features, you can choose a Rug that suits your horse's needs - whether the focus is on quick drying, comfort during transportation or controlled cooling after exercise.

How to wash and store your cooler rug

To maintain the properties of the Rug it is recommended:

  • to hang the Rug between uses
  • to avoid direct sunlight and large temperature fluctuations
  • to keep the Rug free from dirt and grime
  • to wash according to the manufacturer's instructions or use a rug wash
