Why use gaiters for horses?
If you're like most riders and horse owners, you want to take the best possible care of your horse. Gaiters are used to protect the horse's legs and are important for optimal protection. Here at Unamari, we want to help you do just that, which is why you'll find a large selection of gaiters for horses at great prices.
Gaiters for horses are primarily used as protection against wounds, scratches, blows and injuries that can occur both from something external or if the horse hits itself when it is in motion. Either when free in the paddock, when being handled, or when being ridden for training and competitions. However, some types of gaiters are also used for recovery of the horse's legs after work, during convalescence, or for protection during transportation.
When to use gaiters for horses?
It doesn't matter what type of gaiters you choose for your horse or pony when. Before you choose gaiters, it is therefore important to clarify: What is the purpose of the gaiters and when will they be used?
Will they be used when the horse is in the paddock? Should they be used when you're training or competing? For dressage, jumping, cross-country, a ride in the open, during transportation or in the box? Maybe you need them to make you and your horse visible in traffic, or to dress up in a Christmas outfit? There are many situations where gaiters can be used for your horse or pony. If you choose the wrong type of gaiters for the purpose, they can do more harm than good in the worst cases. Are you ready to dive into our extensive range? Then you have everything you need right here! If you're in doubt or want to know more, read on as we dive deeper into our universe of gaiters for horse and pony.
How should gaiters fit on a horse?
Gaiters should first and foremost fit the horse's legs both in height and width. In height, so they don't chafe when the horse moves. In width so they are neither too loose and can fall off, nor too tight so they are uncomfortable and can hurt the horse. The gaiters are wrapped around the horse's legs and are always closed on the outside and to the rear. If you need protection for your horse's legs, you can also take a look at our wide range of bandages.
What size gaiters should I choose for my pony or horse?
Our gaiters from Horse Guard, Catago including Catago FIR-Tech are made in either sizes: s, m, l and xl or pony, cob, full and xfull. In some variants, the sizes are pony/cob and full. As we design, develop, produce and sell all our products, you can be sure that the sizes are tried and tested. You will generally need to choose the size that your horse or pony normally wears. If the gaiters you choose are in sets of 2, it can sometimes be a good idea to choose a size larger for the hind legs than for the front legs. The main rule is that you can trust that our gaiters are true to size, and if a single model is outside the norm, it will be indicated under the individual item.
Folding gaiters
In the folding gaiters category you will find good types from both Horse Guard and Catago. When looking for folding gaiters, it can be good to choose a gaiter that is lightweight but still provides good protection.
Dressage gaiters
In our range you will find Horse Guard dressage gaiters, Catago dressage gaiters and Catago FIR-Tech dressage gaiters. What they all have in common is that they are super stylish and functional dressage gaiters that protect against impact and provide support. If your horse or pony has a narrow gait, a fixed shell gaiters is recommended.
Lamb dressage gaiters
Lambskin gaiters have traditionally been a popular choice for dressage riders for their horses and ponies. We offer lamb dressage gaiters from both Horse Guard and Catago. Some of our variants are lined with faux lambskin on the entire inside, while others are simply edged with faux lambskin. This gives the exclusive look, but also makes the gaiters a bit lighter.
White dressage gaiters
Dressage riders like to wear white gaiters to competitions. Check the rules for the exact program(s) you'll be riding to see if dressage gaiters and bells are allowed on the competition course. Dive into our wide range of white gaiters, both with lamb, edged with lamb, without lamb, in Catago FIR-tech and more. If you are specifically looking for the popular Catago Fir-Tech dressage gaiters, you can find them here.

Back leg gaiters for jumping are also called ironing gaiters, which you will also find in our range of different types. If you need jumping whips or jumping pads, you can also find them in our webshop.
Terrain gaiters

The gaiters' strong outer shell provides good protection without compromising on the inner fit or comfort. Four elastic straps with buttons for easy donning. Perforated neoprene core allows excess heat to escape during exercise
Stable and transport gaiters
What do stable gaiters do? In general terms, stall blankets protect the horse's legs when it's stabled. They're not designed for the horse to move around a lot with them on, but in recent years they've also become very popular for use during transportation, where the horse is also at rest.
Choose our Horse Guard stable gaiter if you're looking for a simple and useful stable gaiter or choose our Catago FIR-tech gaiter if you want the beneficial effects on top of protecting your horse's legs.
The Catago FIR-Tech stable and transport gaiter gives your horse maximum protection and comfort in the stable and during transportation. The gaiter has a removable pad and inner material with ceramic particles, providing an advanced double-action effect. The gaiter has a great fit and is held in place by the wide Velcro closures. The back of the gaiters has a rubber reinforcement that protects the horse's legs if the horse steps on the gaiters. The gaiters are durable and practical, ideal for increasing well-being, reducing recovery periods and warming up muscles, tendons and joints - before and after turnout, training and competition
Catago FIR-Tech Neoprene inner pad or padded liner
There are different inner pads for the Catago FIR-Tech stable gaiter. The Catago FIR-Tech neoprene inner pad is made of perforated neoprene covered with FIR-Tech material. The ceramic particles in the FIR-Tech material help increase blood circulation, reducing recovery periods and preventing injuries. The perforated neoprene provides maximum ventilation and helps to transport excess heat away from the horse's legs.
Horse cooling pads
Cooling pads are a smart and practical choice if you need to cool your horse's legs. We offer cooling pads that can be mounted in the FIR-Tech stable gaiters. They do not contain the FIR-Tech function, but come with a smart cooling bag. You cool the inserts by storing them in the freezer. If you need to take them with you, put them in the cooler bag to keep them cooler for longer.
Catago Quick Dry gaiters
We also offer drying gaiters with high absorbency and a soft and delicious texture. Four long Velcro straps ensure optimal closure to keep the gaiters securely in place. Can easily be used on both front and hind legs. Ideally used after washing to speed up the drying process before the horse returns to the stable.
Reflex gaiters
If you need to travel in traffic with your horse or pony after dark, remember to check the current legislation regarding lights and reflectors for horses. Find our neon colored gaiters with teddy lining and 5 cm wide reflector, along with the full range of products with reflectors here
Christmas gaiters
In our Horse Guard Christmas range you'll find a set of four red gaiters with white edges. They can be combined with several Christmas items - rug, loincloth, underlay and Santa hats that fit over the rider's riding helmet and the horse.
Cleaning gaiters
Clean your gaiters regularly. Not only because it's nice to have clean gear, but most importantly because dirty gaiters can be uncomfortable for the horse and can cause cuts and sores on the horse's legs. Pay special attention to whether the gaiters have dirt, grime and sweat on the inside. Depending on the type of gaiters, you can clean them by hand washing and possibly scrubbing with water and a mild soap. Some types can also be washed in a washing machine. In that case, we recommend using a wash bag.
