A good riding jacket needs to do more than just keep you warm. When you’re riding, working in the stable, or spending many hours outdoors with your horse, a jacket has to meet very different requirements than regular casual wear. It must allow freedom of movement in the saddle, protect against wind and weather, and at the same time be comfortable to wear all day long.

At Unamari, you’ll find riding jackets from CATAGO and Equipage, which we develop and design ourselves based on Riders’ everyday lives. That’s why our collection includes riding jackets for all kinds of weather, seasons, and needs.

Why riders choose a real riding jacket

Many people ask if a regular jacket can be used for riding. Of course, it can in some situations, but a proper riding jacket is designed specifically for equestrian sports and therefore features a number of details that make a noticeable difference in practice.

A good riding jacket is designed to perform in the saddle. That’s why many models have two-way zippers, vents, or special cuts that make it easier to move freely while riding. At the same time, the fit is designed so that the jacket doesn’t restrict your shoulders, upper arms, or hips while you’re riding.

In addition, riding jackets are often made from durable materials that can withstand daily use around horses. Dust, hay, mud, and changing weather conditions place high demands on your clothing, which is why both durability and comfort are important features.

Practical details like pockets for your cell phone, keys, or treats also help make everyday life easier, whether you’re riding, training from the ground, or working in the stable.

How do you choose the right riding jacket?

The best riding jacket depends on how and when you ride.

For cold winter days

If you ride a lot in the winter, warmth is a crucial factor. Many riders opt for a longer style or one of the padded winter riding jackets with extra lining. A long style protects a larger part of the body from the cold and wind, while also keeping your thighs and hips warm during your ride.

Winter riding jackets can be insulated with both synthetic materials and other heat-retaining solutions. If you often ride in rain, wind, or cold temperatures, it’s a good idea to prioritize both water-repellent materials and high insulation.

For transitional periods and changeable weather

Spring and fall often place the greatest demands on outerwear. Here, a lightly lined riding jacket, softshell, or parka can be an ideal choice as a transitional riding jacket. These styles protect against wind and light rain without getting too hot as the temperature rises during the day.

For summer and active riding

In the summer, many riders opt for lighter and more breathable summer riding jackets. The focus here is often on ventilation, light weight, and materials that help the body breathe and release excess heat when you start to sweat. You can also opt for a riding vest if you want even more freedom in the saddle and don’t need the extra protection from wind and weather.

Long or short riding jacket?

One of the most important choices is the length.

Long riding jackets

In developing our long riding jackets, we’ve found time and again that riders specifically request extra protection around the thighs and hips. This is often where the cold is felt first during longer rides in the winter months. They cover larger areas of the body and provide extra comfort on cold days. Many long models are equipped with slits and zippers so they still function well in the saddle.

Short riding jackets

Short riding jackets offer a sportier look and are often perceived as lighter during active riding. They offer great freedom of movement and are a popular choice among riders who want a jacket that also works well outside of equestrian sports.

Materials and features that make a difference

When we develop riding jackets, it’s not just about design. The choice of materials is crucial for both comfort and durability.

Softshell is among the most popular materials because it combines flexibility, breathability, and wind protection. Many models are also water-repellent, making them well-suited for changeable weather.

Several of our riding jackets are also made from polyester or other durable materials that can withstand daily use in the stable. Strong stitching and robust outer materials help extend the jacket’s lifespan.

Many modern riding jackets are also designed with a focus on breathability. High breathability helps the body release excess heat, so moisture doesn’t build up against the skin during activity.

Designed by riders for riders

At Unamari, we work each season on the development of CATAGO and Equipage. This means we continuously gain insight into what riders are looking for and the challenges their gear needs to address.

When we develop new riding jackets, we focus on everything from fit and freedom of movement to the choice of materials, pockets, hoods, and functional details. The goal is to create jackets that perform just as well on the trail as they do in the stable. We also place great emphasis on ensuring that our competition jackets comply with rules and requirements, while also being comfortable and stylish to wear.

That’s why you’ll find riding jackets in various lengths, fits, and materials. After all, needs vary from rider to rider, and the right riding jacket is rarely the same for everyone.

Riding jackets for women, men, and children

The collection primarily features riding jackets for women, but at Unamari we also have a large selection of riding jackets for men and children. Although the features are often the same, the cut and fit vary depending on the target audience.

Some riders prefer a more fitted design, while others want extra room for layering under the jacket.

That’s why our models come in different fits, making it easier for you to find a riding jacket that suits your specific needs.

What do water column rating and breathability mean?

When you’re looking for a new riding jacket, you’ll often come across technical terms.

  • Water column pressure indicates how well the jacket resists water. The higher the number, the better the protection against rain. We develop jackets with a water column rating of up to 10,000 mm.
  • Breathability describes how effectively the material wicks heat and moisture away from the body. High breathability is especially important if you ride actively or frequently switch between activity and breaks.
  • Taped seams help prevent water from seeping through the seams and are therefore particularly important on more waterproof models.

How to best care for your riding Jacket

Even the best riding jacket will last longer with proper maintenance. Be sure to remove dust, hair, and dirt regularly, and wash the jacket only when necessary.

Always follow the washing instructions, avoid unnecessary use of fabric softener, and keep in mind that technical fabrics often require gentler care than regular clothing. This way, the jacket will retain its water-repellent and breathable properties for longer.
