What is an Icelandic saddle pad?

An Icelandic saddle pad is a specially shaped rug for Icelandic horses, designed to fit the characteristically short and compact back that many Icelandic horses have. Unlike standard models, which are often too long, an Icelandic pad is shorter in length and anatomically shaped so it neither bothers the horse nor interferes with the correct positioning of the saddle.

A good Icelandic pad helps the horse by ensuring a stable contact between horse and saddle so that the entire saddle lies evenly and without pressure points. The pad also plays an important role in wicking sweat away from the horse, keeping the back as dry and comfortable as possible during riding.

When choosing a pad for Icelandic riders, special priority should be given to:

• Fit: It should lie just right on the short back without creating Paddocks or pressure.
• Breathability: Materials with good ventilation help wick away heat and moisture.
• Shock absorption: A well-cushioned pad reduces strain on the horse's back and improves comfort.

Some Icelandic saddle pad are also designed with mane freedom, which provides extra space around the withers. This is especially beneficial for horses with a prominent or withered withers, as it reduces the risk of irritation and friction under the saddle.

CATAGO FIR-Tech saddle pad correction

In addition to FIR-Tech, the Catago correction pad also has six compartments in the saddle bed - three on each side. This makes it possible to change the thickness of the pad locally and adapt it to the individual horse's back with the included foam pads.

This can be relevant for young horses or horses in increased training, where the saddle may not fit perfectly as the horse develops. The saddle can be raised slightly at the front or back, or only on one side if the horse has developed an imbalance due to injury, for example. Extra foam pads are included, so there is ample opportunity to adjust the saddle pressure.

How to wash your Icelandic saddle pad

Catago FIR-Tech pads can be machine washed at max 30 degrees without reducing the FIR-Tech effect. We recommend that you use a laundry bag to protect the underlay during washing. It's a good idea to wash the sandal pad regularly to avoid dirt and sweat that can bother the horse. However, always follow the washing instructions on the Icelandic saddle pad to avoid damaging it.
