At Unamari, we want to give all foals a good and safe start in life. We design, develop and sell high-quality riding equipment, including a large selection of Foal Halter in several variants and colors. A Foal Halter is often the first piece of equipment the foal meets, so it's important to choose a model that fits correctly, is very comfortable for the foal and has good adjustability.

A safe start with the right Foal Halter

The foal halter is an important part of the horse's equipment. Used for handling, training and socialization, it helps the foal learn to respond calmly to the pull of the lead rope. An adjustable Foal Halter allows the halter to grow with the foal and always fit comfortably - regardless of age or size. At Unamari, you'll find foal halters in materials such as nylon, leather and synthetic material.

Some models come with soft neoprene padding for extra comfort, and some come with cute details like text on the Noseband. For example, we have our Horse Guard Malva Foal Halter with the text "Handsome Boy" and "Pretty Girl". You can choose from several variants and several colors such as navy, black, brown, pink, white and light blue.

What is a foal halter used for?

A foal halter is used to make the foal safe from human contact and easy to handle. It allows the foal to learn to be pulled, stand tied and be inspected without stress. The halter acts as a safe tool to establish control, but without hurting or frightening. With multiple adjustment options, it can be customized to fit both pony foals and yearlings perfectly. A high-quality foal halter is therefore not only practical, but an important tool in the education and training of young horses.

When and how to put a halter on a foal?

It's important to have your foal halter knowledge under control before you introduce the foal to this type of riding equipment. This will give you and your foal the best experience when training and riding starts.

When should the foal wear a halter for the first time?

It varies when a foal is ready to wear a halter for the first time - some are curious and calm, while others need a little more time. Often the halter can be introduced in the first few weeks when the foal shows trust in humans. The most important thing is that the experience is calm, positive and stress-free.

How to get your foal used to the halter - step by step

  1. Start with short sessions where the foal is allowed to sniff the halter.
  2. Praise and reward when the foal shows interest.
  3. Wrap the foal halter loosely around the head without tightening it - repeat several times.
  4. Once the foal is comfortable, the halter can be tightened slightly to get used to the feeling.
  5. Slowly ease the lead rope so the foal learns to respond calmly to small pulls.
  6. Check regularly that the halter is still in place and not tight on the foal.

This process builds trust and makes handling much easier later in life. That way, your foal will see the halter as a good thing and not frighten it.

How a foal halter should fit

A properly fitted halter provides both safety and comfort. The halter should fit snugly but without tightening or restricting movement. There should be room for you to insert two fingers between the Halter and the foal's head.

      • The nosepiece should sit on the bone - not on the cartilage - and about two fingers above the nostrils.
      • The neck strap should rest comfortably without pressing behind the ears.
      • Make sure the halter doesn't pinch at the jaw or rub on the cheekbones.
      • Use a tape measure to measure around the forehead, above the cheekbones and under the jaw to find the right size.

An adjustable foal halter with buckles at the Noseband, neck strap and neck provides the best adjustment options. Remember to check the fit regularly - foals grow quickly and a Halter can quickly become too tight. Also consider a Halter that can Jumping or breaks if the foal gets stuck. This increases safety significantly. A halter with stud chain can be useful for stronger horses, but is rarely necessary for a young foal.

Choose the right foal halter

There are many options when it comes to halters. The most important thing is the comfort of the foal so it has a good experience with the equipment. That's why it's important to choose a Halter that fits the foal's growing head.

Adjustable foal halter

An adjustable foal halter makes it possible to adjust in several places - at the noseband, neck strap and neck - so it always fits perfectly. This ensures maximum comfort and you don't have to change the Halter too often as the foal grows.

Leather foal halter

A leather halter has a timeless look and only gets more beautiful with good leather care. Available in several colors such as brown and black, it's perfect for taking your foal or pony foal to a show or competition.

Show halter for foals

Leather show halters give an exclusive and professional look. Many models have beautiful details on the Noseband and can be matched with the mare's bridle in the same color. They are available in several variants and sizes from pony foal to yearling.
