A stable rug, as the name suggests, is mainly used when the horse is in the stable. However, they are also popular for use during transportation and riding competitions, and can even, in a pinch, function as an under rug under an out rug or turnout rug. Here at Unamari, we design, produce and sell stable rugs in our own brands Catago and Horse Guard. You will therefore exclusively find the full range from these two brands on this page. Our many years of experience in designing rugs and continuous development is your guarantee of good fits and durable materials.
Why use a stable rug?
A stable rug protects the horse from cold and drafts in the stable. It helps keep the muscles warm and prevents the horse from getting cold after exercise or washing. Many horse owners choose to give their horse or pony a rug during the season for extra protection. The thickness of the rug depends on the temperature and the individual horse's need to be protected from the cold and wind.
However, it is better to choose a slightly thinner Rug as the horse can better regulate its own temperature. However, always keep an eye on the horse so you know if the protection is enough.
Our stable rugs are all made of durable quality materials, but they are not made to withstand rain and snow and are therefore light, soft and comfortable for your horse to wear in the box, taking into account that the horse can eat, rest, lie down and sleep with great comfort.
Change the rug according to your horse's individual needs
It can be an advantage to change the rug so your horse doesn't wear the same one all day. When the horse is outside, it needs a rug that can withstand the current weather conditions and keep the horse dry and comfortable. However, outdoor rugs can become heavy and stiff from dirt and mud, or wet on the outside from rain and snow. Therefore, when the horse comes inside, it may be a good idea to hang the outdoor rug to dry and dress your horse in a clean and dry stable rug.
The very routine of changing the rug gives you the opportunity to check the rug, buckles and straps for any damage, and the same goes for the horse. Is there a small scratch, wound or similar that needs to be dealt with before the horse is stabled? Then you can do this.
Stable rugs throughout the year
You may equate stable rugs with winter, but in many cases the weather in spring and fall can also fluctuate in temperature, which is when a stable rug is relevant.
Many of our warmblood riding horses naturally have a fine and short coat, while others are clipped regularly - some even year round. There are many reasons for clipping horses, but one of the main reasons is to avoid a long, wet coat that can take a long time to dry after exercise. A short coat makes it easier to keep the horse clean and the horse dries faster, reducing the risk of illness caused by cold and damp. It also makes daily handling more convenient.
However, a shorn horse requires extra attention when it comes to using Rugs. It's important to take temperature fluctuations into account and continuously adjust the rug as needed, as the horse loses some of its natural ability to regulate its body temperature when its coat is clipped.
Here at Unamari, we offer a wide range of Stable rugs in different thicknesses. If you're ready to dive into our full range of stable rugs, you'll find them all here.
Which stable rug should you get?
Stable rugs are available in many different materials such as wool, cotton and thermo, so there's plenty to choose from when you need a new stable rug for your horse. A stable rug is designed to be used in the stable, and here at Unamari you'll find many options for keeping warm with stable rugs.
Stable rug with neck
A stable rug with neck is ideal for horses that need extra warmth and protection in the stable. The Rug covers both the body and neck, which helps to keep the horse warm - especially on cold nights and in draft conditions.
Although a stable rug is not intended for outdoor use, the neck variant provides a more even heat distribution and reduces the risk of cold around the neck and shoulders. It is therefore a popular choice both in winter and during transitional periods when temperature differences can be large.
A stable rug with a neck is especially useful for clipped horses or older horses that need a little extra comfort and protection in everyday life.
Horse Guard stable rug
In our Horse Guard range you will find stable rugs in different models such as the Sophie stable rug with 100 g and 300 g filling. We also offer several models with a belly flap and 300 g filling. A belly flap gives your horse extra protection under the belly, which is otherwise not covered by traditional rugs.
Our Horse Guard rugs are produced in sizes from 115 - 165 cm. Which covers most sizes from pony to large horse.
Catago stable rug
Our Catago stable rug is a favorite with many horse owners, and in all modesty we dare say that it is with good reason. It's a nice, strong stable rug in 420 denier outer material. The Rug is available in 100g, 300g and 500g.
The rug has an adjustable double front closure with gun hooks and D-rings, goose slit, cross ties, leg straps and tail flap. The lining of this rug is in a smooth material that is gentle on the horse's coat. The rug also has an incredibly nice wide Fleece rug collar that protects the mane and makes it extra comfortable for the horse.
The design is simple and timeless black with contrasts in gray, blue and brown, so the three thicknesses are easy to distinguish from each other. A true favorite, also at shows - during transport, in the show box, but also for example when there is a waiting time between classes.
Catago rugs are produced in sizes from 115 - 165 cm, covering the needs of a smaller pony to a large horse.
Catago FIR-Tech stable rug
We also offer a stable rug with FIR-Tech technology. The CATAGO FIR-Tech Quilt Stable Rug has a nice soft fur collar and is 200 g. filling. With FIR-Tech technology, this rug has beneficial anti-inflammatory and warming effects from the woven-in ceramic particles. The wide faux lambskin collar and deep shoulder gussets provide freedom of movement and protect the coat and mane from rubbing. The Rug is made from a soft yet durable fabric with a double diamond quilted stitching pattern.
Benefits of stable rugs for all horses
For many horses, a stable rug is an essential piece of equipment - especially in the cooler months when temperatures drop and there are many factors that affect their comfort and health. A good stable rug can help create the best conditions for both well-being and recovery.
A stable rug helps protect the horse in several ways:
- Keeps the horse warm and relaxed - by retaining body heat, the horse can recover and relax more easily, especially after exercise or washing.
- Comfortable materials - most Fleece rugs have a smooth outside for easy cleaning and a soft cotton, fleece or nylon inside that feels comfortable against the skin.
- Protection against insects and cold - a Stable rug acts as a barrier against both drafts and annoying insects in the stable.
- Disease prevention - a suitable Rug can reduce the risk of respiratory diseases and skin problems by keeping your horse dry and clean.
- Good fit - the right Stable Rug fits your horse perfectly for optimal comfort.
- High breathability - our Stable Rugs come in many different types with high breathability.
In short, a stable rug helps many horses maintain comfort and health, so they thrive better through the winter and after physical activity.
Buy great stable rugs at Unamari
When choosing a stable rug, it's important to consider both size and fit. At Unamari, you'll find Stable rugs in all sizes and thicknesses. So whether you're looking for a stable rug in 100g, 200g or 300g and even thicker, you'll find it all right here on the site.
It's recommended to use one rug during the day and another at night when the temperature drops. That's why it's important to have the right stable rug ready to keep your horse comfortable throughout the night. Shorn horses need more insulation than unshorn horses as they lack natural protection from the elements. Keep this in mind when looking for a good Stable rug for the cooler months.
