Breeches are the most important piece of riding clothing to wear. Breeches give you comfort and help you get a good grip in the saddle. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, a pair of breeches is essential for you to perform at your best and have the most comfortable ride.

At Unamari, we design and develop breeches from Catago and Equipage, and offer the full range of breeches for every taste on this site. Catago is the clothing supplier to the Danish and Norwegian national team - you will therefore see many top riders riding in Catago breeches.

Should you use pants suitable for riding?

Yes - if you ride more than a few times, breeches will quickly prove to be an indispensable part of your riding gear. They're designed to make riding comfortable, so you won't be bothered by seams, creases or fabric that pinches and pinches. At the same time, breeches give you freedom of movement and a secure grip in the saddle thanks to silicone or leather reinforcements on the inside.

Our breeches are designed to fit snugly without being tight, and they are free of seams in the places where you have the most contact with the horse. Both Catago and Equipage offer models with silicone grippers, which help your legs and seat get better stability in the saddle.

Can I use regular pants instead of breeches?

You can in principle ride in regular pants, but this is rarely a good idea. Jeans or Chaps often have rough stitching and stiff material that can chafe and cause discomfort while riding. At the same time, they lack the features that make breeches special - such as the tight fit, elasticity and extra grip in the saddle.

Ordinary breeches are designed specifically for riders: they fit snugly without being tight, are free of annoying seams and provide better stability when riding. Therefore, you will almost always have a much more comfortable experience in pants made for riding.

Breeches for shows

When you compete in shows, it's important that your breeches meet the rules and look professional. Most shows require breeches in colors such as white, beige or light grey that support the elegant and uniform look the sport is known for.

Aside from the color, it's also worth choosing pants in a material that is both comfortable to wear throughout a long day and gives you the necessary mobility. Grip breeches are a popular choice because they provide extra stability in the saddle - something that can be a big advantage during competitions.

By choosing high-quality breeches, you'll not only look great on the course, but also get comfort and functionality that can help support your performance.

Which breeches are best?

You need to consider your riding discipline, grip material, waist height and fit when buying breeches. We have both high-waisted and regular waist breeches. What's right for you depends on your body shape and how you like your pants to fit. Most breeches are also available with varying waistband widths.

Our breeches from both Catago and Equipage are generally made of elastic and stretchable material and are therefore quite flexible in fit and fit a wide range of body shapes. If you have difficulty finding breeches for your long legs, for example, you can take a look at "Shannon" from Equipage, which has a longer leg length.

If you have a curvy body or wide calves, you can take a look at our "Rachel" riding tights from Catago, which are thin and very stretchy in material, or you can check out "Aroy" from Catago, which are riding tights designed in technical fabric that gives them superior stretch and shape retention and an unbeatable fit.

What is the difference between breeches and Riding tights?

At Unamari we make a clear distinction between breeches and riding tights because they each have their strengths and are suitable for different needs.

The most significant difference lies in the waistband:

  • Breeches have a tighter waistband with button and zipper for a more structured fit. This means the pants have a stable fit and a classic feel - often a preferred choice for shows or when you want a more formal look.
  • Riding tights instead have an elastic waistband all around. It is more flexible and yielding, making the tights easy to pull on and especially comfortable for everyday riding and training.

In addition, the two types differ in material and function. Breeches are typically made of a thicker fabric for extra support and often include details like pockets, reinforcements or grip variants. Riding tights are usually made from thinner, breathable material with high stretch, making them lightweight, supple and ideal on hot days or for riders who prioritize full freedom of movement. Both breeches and Riding tights can be found in good quality at Unamari.

Breeches with grip - full-grip or knee grip

When choosing breeches here at Unamari, you can decide whether you want breeches without grip, with knee grip or full grip. Grip breeches refer to the material on the inside of the breeches that provides grip in the saddle. Today, all our breeches with grip are made in silicone material.

If you are not familiar with silicone grip, it is comparable to the silicone coating that can be under Socks for small children.

  • Fullgrip covers the entire seat area and goes down the inside of the legs and clearly provides the most grip. This type of grip is preferred by many riders, from the beginner to the experienced rider.
  • Knee grip sits on the inside of the knees and can be preferred by riders who need less grip and more freedom of movement. This can include Jumping, hunting and long distance riders.

That said, all kinds of grip pants can be used by everyone - it's mostly a question of what you're into.

High waist or low waist

The choice between high or low waist is about both comfort and personal preference. High waist riding pants provide extra support around the stomach and lower back, which many riders find comfortable - especially for longer rides or shows where you're in the saddle a lot. They can also be practical if you want the pants to stay in place during movement.

Feel comfortable with breeches for all seasons

When choosing breeches, it's important to think about the season. The right material can make a big difference to your comfort - both on hot summer days and cold winter mornings.

Summer lightweight comfort

For summer, thin and breathable breeches are a must. Models in synthetic tights or ventilated materials help keep your body cool even when the sun is high. Many summer riding pants are also quick-drying, which is a benefit after sweaty rides - you won't get cold when the activity subsides. Thin and more breathable materials like cotton are great for hot summer days as they make it easier for the body to breathe.

Warm and protected in the winter cold

When the cold sets in, insulation and protection are essential. Winter riding pants are often lined with fleece or other warm materials that effectively keep the cold out. Many models are also wind and water repellent, so you can ride comfortably even in harsh winter weather. The big difference between summer and winter breeches is mostly in the material. Perfect transition to fall and spring

In the cool transition months, softshell breeches are the obvious choice. Softshell combines insulating, water-repellent and windproof properties with high comfort. This makes them a flexible solution when the weather changes and you need pants that are both warm and breathable.

Additional features on new breeches

New breeches with smart features are constantly being made. As the designer and developer of breeches and tights from Catago and Equipage, we at Unamari always keep our finger on the pulse so we can help riders with breeches that meet the latest needs. That's why you'll always find riding pants with us that are up to date.

Breeches with pockets

Maybe you're looking for riding pants that have mobile pocket, pockets that can be closed or maybe belt loops? Most breeches at Unamari have pockets - including large pockets that can hold a phone. However, please note that the pockets in our breeches are classic front pockets.

Water-repellent material

If you often ride outdoors in all kinds of weather, breeches in water-repellent material can make a big difference. They are made to resist rain and moisture so you stay dry and comfortable - even on long rides or during training in wet conditions.

Softshell is a popular choice because it combines water-repellent properties with both insulation and breathability. This means you get extra protection against rain and wind without the pants feeling heavy or clammy to wear.

Jodhpur breeches - breeches for Icelandic riders

Jodhpur breeches are longer than traditional riding pants. They can also be adjusted wider at the ankles, typically with a zipper so they can go over the footwear, and they have an elastic band under the foot. They are especially good if you ride in short boots, also called jodhpur boots.

How to choose the right breeches

The right pair of breeches should not only look good - they should also fit perfectly and give you the freedom to move comfortably in the saddle.

Fit is crucial

Breeches should always fit without being too tight. They should not be too big in the waist or too loose around the legs, as this can cause discomfort when riding. Also, make sure they are long enough to reach all the way down to the ankles to avoid creases or chafing under the riding boots.

Price and quality

The price of a good pair of breeches typically ranges from around 400 DKK and upwards. Often the price is linked to the quality: more expensive breeches are usually made of durable materials with better breathability, flexibility and details that increase comfort. It's therefore worth investing in a high-quality pair of breeches - they last longer and provide a more comfortable riding experience.

Find the right match for your needs

When it comes to breeches, it's worth considering your daily riding, your budget and which features you prioritize most. Whether it's extra freedom of movement, warmth for winter or lightweight materials for summer, there's a pair of breeches to suit your needs.

Large selection of breeches in all sizes

At Unamari we own and design the Danish brands Catago and Equipage. Equipage is good quality that most people can afford, while Catago is for the discerning rider for whom only the best quality is good enough. Catago is, for example, the main sponsor of the national teams.

Here you will find our wide range of trousers with advanced grip technologies, in special stretch and a good fit that also fits perfectly into any rider's wardrobe. And if you take the time to maintain your pants, they can last even longer! Buy regular breeches in the perfect fit for all riders at Unamari.
